 on March 2, 1986. It is known as the first multicultural fraternity in the United States. Epsilon Sigma Rho is committed to spreading the philosophy of acceptance of any and all people regardless of their ethnicity or background. As an organization, Epsilon Sigma Rho encourages people to learn about other cultures. One of the ways Epsilon Sigma Rho supports the cultural educational experience is by promoting cultural events in the community and within campuses.

Founding

On March 2, 1986 eight men founded Epsilon Sigma Rho Fraternity at California State University Sacramento. Sigma Rho has seven founding members (these men are referred to by the fraternity as "the Creators"): Juan Carlos Sanchez

, Salvador Robles, Jose Munoz, Martin Rodriguez, Juan Mercado, Gerardo Manriquez, and David Jaramillo. These men sought a strong brotherhood based on diversity and a devotion to cultural awareness. Through developing a community support network, a strong bond amongst the brothers and cultural awareness on the campus and community.

Expansion

The dedicated brotherhood of Epsilon Sigma Rho has led to the expansion of Epsilon Sigma Rho to University of California Davis, California State University Chico, California State University Fresno, California State University Monterey Bay, and Arizona State University Tempe.

Beliefs

Epsilon Sigma Rho is an open-minded brotherhood. Epsilon Sigma Rho accepts everyone for their race, color, religious beliefs, cultural traditions, and individual differences. Epsilon Sigma Rho is not just a fraternity; they are a family with the same ideas but different upbringings and backgrounds. "Our Differences Are Our Strengths, not weaknesses!"

One of the goals for Epsilon Sigma Rho is to continually promote higher education, and the achievement of academic success. Epsilon Sigma Rho is very proud of our brothers that have been able to successfully complete the various degrees, masters, and Ph.D's. Epsilon Sigma Rho hope's that they are a positive influence in their communities that promotes multi-cultural awareness and academic success. The strength of Epsilon Sigma Rho is it's multi-cultural brotherhood. "We may come from several different nationalities, ethnicities, and backgrounds but, we all come together to form a strong bond in brotherhood." "This Unity is what gives us strength and makes Epsilon Sigma Rho Fraternity stand out."

Philanthropy

One of Epsilon Sigma Rho's goals is to spread its ideals and help local communities by participating in several types of community services. From tutoring high school students to sponsor multi-cultural events on campuses, Epsilon Sigma Rho pride itself on promoting cultural awareness.

Prostate cancer awareness

Epsilon Sigma Rho is proud to adopt "The Fight Against Prostate Cancer" as the official philanthropy of the fraternity. Prostate cancer is an often misunderstood and largely under publicized disease that affects over 180,000 men each year. Like other forms of cancer, prostate cancer has adverse effects for a victim's family and friends. Moreover, prostate cancer is not partial to one ethnicity. All men can potentially suffer and even die from this disease. It is our fraternity's mission to educate as many people from our respective campuses and communities about how to prevent and receive treatment for prostate cancer. Events include: DJ vs Prostate Cancer, Sorority Kickball and Community Presentations.

Multicultural awareness

Epsilson Sigma Rho is a Multi-Cultural Fraternity that encourages and supports Multi-Cultural Awareness. Even though we come different cultural backgrounds, we come together as brothers to form the Epsilon Sigma Rho Family. We are committed to spreading our philosophy of acceptance of any and all people regardless of their ethnicity or background. As an organization, we encourage people to learn about other cultures. One of the ways we support this educational experience is by promoting cultural events in our communities and campuses.

Membership

Only those students with full-time enrollment at a college or university in which Epsilon Sigma Rho is recognized, or in the process of recognition, who have completed at least one semester or quarter of a four year institution, and have complied with the laws of Epsilon Sigma Rho, may receive a bid for institution or be initiated into the organization Epsilon Sigma Rho. No person may receive a bid for initiation or initiated into this fraternity until he obtains at least an overall scholastic average of 2.00. If a charter or chapter violates this policy their chapter will be placed on probation status. All prospective members must show proof that they meet the GPA requirements set forth by this organization.

Membership into Epsilon Sigma Rho shall not be granted to any person who is a member of a local, national, or international social fraternity. And should a member become so, he shall upon such action be automatically expelled from Epsilon Sigma Rho without regard to any due process of prudence we find in the laws of Epsilon Sigma Rho. Honors organizations and business networking fraternities are exempt from this policy.

A brother of Epsilon Sigma Rho will become an alumnus of this fraternity upon either graduation from a college or university, or upon official recognition by the Alumni Association.

All perspective members who have received bids for Epsilon Sigma Rho shall be initiated in accordance with the traditions of the fraternity.

Hazing

I will respect the dignity of all persons; therefore I will not physically, mentally, psychologically or sexually abuse or haze any human being.

Undergraduate chapter officers

The governing body of each individual chapter shall consist of, but not limited to, President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Sergeant-at-Arms, Historian, Rush Chairman

The responsibilities of each officer are determined by each respective chapter as long as they are not in conflict with the policies of this constitution.

Alumni Association

The Alumni Association shall appoint one member to be an ex-officio member of the Governing Council.

Alumni chapter officers

Officers may vary from each chapter/association with some chapters not using certain positions and others creating new positions. The duties of each officer may vary from each chapter as well. Many alumni chapters use the more common office titles such as: president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer.

Governing Council of the fraternity

The Governing Council is the supreme governing body of Epsilon Sigma Rho, and shall act as the ultimate interpreter of the Constitution and the Bylaws of Epsilon Sigma Rho.

The Governing Council shall consist of the Board of Directors and two elected officials representing any chapter officially recognized by this fraternity.

Board of Directors officers

  • Executive Director The Executive Director shall have the power to see that all officers of the executive board and chapter presidents discharge their duties with impartiality, accurately, faithfully, and promptly. The duties of the Executive Director shall be to communicate frequently with all recognized chapter presidents to address business matters, meet Governing Council meeting requirements, oversee Board of Directors and entire Governing Council, fulfill the policies of this constitution, and he shall act as the official liaison with the Alumni Association of Epsilon Sigma Rho, serve as the official spokesperson, figurehead and representative for Epsilon Sigma Rho, and perform other duties as prescribed by the Governing Council.

  • Director of Policy and Procedure The Director of Policy and Procedure shall have the power to enforce the policies and procedures as described by this constitution and Bylaws of Epsilon Sigma Rho. The duties of the Director of Policy and Procedure shall be to address and research urgent situations under the discretion of the Governing Council, enforce discipline procedures under Article VII of this constitution, and shall keep order at all Governing Council meetings according to “Robert’s Rule of Order”.

  • Chief Financial Office The Chief Financial Officer shall have the power to authorize all checks associated with the Governing Council of Epsilon Sigma Rho. The duties of the Chief Financial Officer shall be to uphold the financial responsibilities of the Governing Council as described in Article I of Official Bylaws of Epsilon Sigma Rho Fraternity Inc., organize fundraisers for the Governing Council, keep an accurate record of all monies, present an annual budget to the Governing Council at the end of the fiscal year, and perform duties prescribed by the Governing Council.

  • Director of Philanthropy The Director of Philanthropy shall oversee all chapters’ community service efforts, assist with the development of community service programs, and organize philanthropic activities that aid in the on-going advocacy this fraternity’s official philanthropy, prostate cancer.

  • Director of Expansion The Director of Expansion shall chair the committee of expansion, actively develop the expansion the fraternity, coordinate with the Alumni Association, follow all guidelines for the expansion process as described in the official Bylaws of Epsilon Sigma Rho, and perform duties as prescribed by the Governing Council.
