, named in honor of a distinguished local businessman who served on the New Hanover County (NC) Board of Education 1941-1973.
It has been recognized as a North Carolina Hallmarks of Excellence School and, in 2002, won the Governor’s Business Partnership Award with General Electric. In 2010 it was identified as a high growth School of Distinction.
Al O'Briant is the Principal of Laney High, succeeding Robert Grimes in 2007.
The school's front exterior and gym was used in The CW's T.V. show One Tree Hill
