It is 4.5 miles (7 km) east of Huddersfield and 5 miles (8 km) west of Wakefield. The village lies in moorland

 close to the Emley Moor TV Transmitter. Emley dates from Anglo-Saxon times.

Emley Moor colliery closed in 1985 after a year-long miners' strike, and is now a business park.

Emley has three pubs: "The White Horse", "AFC Emley Sports Bar" and "The Wentworth" and a stone cross in the centre of the village. There is also a grocery/newsagents, and a post-office. The Green Dragon pub closed in 2009 and was demolished soon after. 7 new houses are currently being built on the site.

There is a cross in the centre of the village, which is now only a stump, but was originally a market cross.

Etymology

The name of the village is thought to date from Saxon times, possibly derived from "Emma's clearing". The village was listed as Ameleie in the 1086 Domesday Book

History

Bentley Grange was a Thirteenth century mine and forge in the village. There are still bell pits in the area, though these are though to date from later workings. St. Michael's church in the village dates from the 15th century.

A traditional event that happens in Emley is 'The Emley Boundary Walk'. The walk takes place every 7 years to walk the 17 mile boundary of Emley. The event has been going since 1857 and the most recent walk took place in 2007.
