In May, 2006, El Cenizo gained national attention when it was widely reported that the city had adopted Spanish as its official language. In an interview on a national cable news network held on May 23, 2006, its mayor defended the decision but said that official business was now conducted in both English and Spanish. He also said that while he supported English as the common and unifying language of the United States, he believed that any attempt to make English that "official" national language would have a discriminatory effect against bilingual programs.

Government

El Cenizo is a Type C General Law City in Texas. It has a City Commission Form of government which includes a Mayor and Two City Commissioners elected at large. The City is currently home to the states youngest Mayor. Raul Reyes was elected in 2004 at the age of 21. At 26, Mayor Reyes is currently serving his 3rd term. El Cenizo is home to one of the nations youngest Mayors. Since taking office, under his administration, El Cenizo has worked closely with local, state and federal agencies to pave all the streets, build the city's first fire station, the first municipal park and has constructed more than 150,000 linear feet of sidewalks. The Mayor also created the El Cenizo Police Department and the El Cenizo Municipal Court. Currently, the city has started a 1.6 million dollar storm drainage project, has a planning grant for 2029, and is in the process of building the city's first public library.
