The Egypt Medal 1882-1889 was awarded for the military actions involving the British Army during the 1882 Anglo-Egyptian War. The war become due to the British involvement in Egypt deepened after the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 and foreign armies mutinied and triggered an anti-European uprising in 1882.
There were two versions of the medal, the first were the ones issued during 1882 which had "1882" engraved below the sphinx. The second version was the same but without the "1882" engravement.
All recipients of the Egypt Medal were also eligible for one of the four Khedive's star.
On the front of the medal, the recipient's number, rank, name and regiment are engraved on the edge. On the reverse side, the Sphinx on a pedestal with the word 'EGYPT' above.
Description
- Its a circular, silver made medal, 36mm diameter.
- The obverse has the legend "VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX." and the veiled head of Queen Victoria.
- The recipient's number, rank, name and regiment are engraved on the edge.
- On the reverse side, the Sphinx on a pedestal with the word 'EGYPT' above.
