 as a member of the 11th Pennsylvania Reserve Regiment and eventually rose to the rank of major. He moved to Oconto, Wisconsin

in 1886. He was elected governor of the state in 1896 and served two terms. He died in his home in Oconto at age 83. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Oconto.

Scofield was the last of several Civil War veterans to serve as Governor of Wisconsin.
