Edward H. Thompson was born in Cumbria
and went against the wishes of his parents to become a painter. In his lifetime he painted as many as ten thousand paintings and most of them of the Lake District
.
Known as Ted, he had an interest in painting from an early age when he spotted someone painting and thought he could do better than that. He eventually became a full time artist
He also painted picture postcards for Valentine

. In the 1940s Valentines reproduced the pictures in the form of booklets and also calendars, Ted's last work for Valentines appears to have been a series of idealised country cottages, in 1949 for a calendar.
