He began his career at Sporting Gijon but in 1933 aged 19 he moved to Real Oviedo for the then record fee of 30.000 pesetas, a fee matched only by Real Madrid in signing Spanish international goalkeeper Zamora.

, Emilin, Casuco, and Gallart formed a forward line that revolutionised Spanish football, with quick passing and movement. Herrerita scored 117 goals in 213 matches in this time at Oviedo and 2 goals for Spain in 6 internationals.

The Spanish league was suspended during the Civil War and when the league resumed Oviedo (who had finished 3rd in the last season before war) were relegated, Herrerita and fellow forward Emilin moved to the then lesser side of Barcelona.
Herrerita stayed at Barcelona for the majority of his career (1939–50) and helped establish the side as a major force in the post-war years.
He ended his career at hometown club Sporting Gijon.

He is 32nd in the all-time Spanish league goalscorers list.
