Murphy was born on September 16, 1878 in New Egypt, New Jersey

, and moved to Farmingdale in 1907. After four years working in sales, he entered the banking business. He was a founder of the First National Bank of Farmingdale, and was a director of the Freehold Trust Company.

He served as President of the Farmingdale Board of Education, and was mayor of Farmingdale for forty years, between 1914 and 1954.

Murphy was elected to the Board of Chosen Freeholders in the 1936 general election
