It also has its own cricket club founded in 1851. The second team won the North east Durham league (division 2) in 2009.
The village has one pub in the form of the The Olde Ships Inn (Travellers Rest) which serves are range of beers and lagers in a traditional setting. This is only one of the four original pubs, these being the Travellers Rest, the Rose & Crown, the Blacksmiths Arms and the Village Tavern.
Other village facilities include the local branch post office, small village shop, the pub, a village primary school along with the church of St Cuthbert, the Methodist chapel and the village cricket Ground.
