originally ordered by Australian National in 1990, and built by Goninan to a local design using imported GE
engines and traction equipment. Appearing visually similar to the AN class
design, these locomotives haul freight trains over Australia. After the formation of the National Rail Corporation
and delivery of the NR class
the ELs were put into storage in November 1997, until the remaining members were acquired by Chicago Freight Car Leasing Australia with the sale being completed in November 1998. EL59 was scrapped after the Mount Christie collision, but the remainder remain in lease service.
