, in 1627 and Earl of Kingston-upon-Hull in 1628. His son, the 2nd Earl, was created Marquess of Dorchester in 1645, but he died without heirs and the Marquessate became extinct. The Earldom was then held by three brothers, grandsons of the second son of the 1st Earl, who were successively 3rd, 4th and 5th Earls. The 5th Earl was created Marquess of Dorchester in 1706 before being raised to the Dukedom in 1715. All the titles except the Dukedom were in the Peerage of England
