 to the south. In 579 the four powers held a peace conference, but fighting soon broke out again and Duke Li defeated Chu at the Battle of Yanling in 574. Said to be arrogant and over-confident, he attempted to get rid of some powerful ministers and was killed in a coup d'etat (by the Luan clan (欒氏) and the Zhonghang clan (中行氏)). He was followed by Duke Dao of Jin (572-558 BC).
