Early life
Bennett was born and raised in Muskegon. He graduated from Ravenna High School in 1962 and attended Muskegon Community College. He served as an apprentice in the United Association Muskegon, Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union 154, graduating as a Journeyman Steamfitter in 1971. He worked for the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union until 2003.Political career
