Doublemoon
Encyclopedia
Founded in 1998 as an offshoot of Pozitif Productions, Doublemoon Records, is an independent pioneering label based in Istanbul, Turkey dedicated to spreading the cultural tapestry that is the city’s sound around the world. Doublemoon has made a name for itself that is synonymous with world fusion where global souls bring together jazz & world, acoustic & electronic, and occidental & oriental music.
Over the past 10 years, in synergy with three sister companies, Doublemoon has succeeded in nurturing a roster of promising talent into internationally recognized artists. Ranging from Sufi-electronica to groove alla turca, from jazz to gypsy funk, from oriental hip hop to Anatolian blues the musical gems that emerge from recording sessions are documented and recorded by Doublemoon. As such, Doublemoon Records is the sole platform for musicians with an amorphous ethnic identity to come together to create, collaborate, and communicate through the universal language of music.
With this philosophy, all albums released by Doublemoon feature cross-cultural collaborations among the likes of Sufi-electronic Mercan Dede with Susheela Raman, Dhafer Youssef, and Hugh Marsh; resident rhythm-meister Burhan Ocal with Jamaledeen Tacuma & Natacha Atlas; chill-out clarinetist Husnu Senlendirici with Laco Tayfa; Turkish-Greek Buzuki Orhan Osman—French-Tunisian Smadj; Alevi influenced Orient Expressions with Sound Engineer Murat Uncuoglu; psychedelic-folk rockers Baba Zula—Mad Professor; as well as nu-jazz pioneer Ilhan Erşahin with Norah Jones;—Doublemoon Records has released close to 44 albums to date!
Doublemoon has received a number of accolades including: being selected as one of the 3 most important independent record labels by the French publication, Vibrations; hitting number one on the European World Music Charts; and landing among the top 10 record labels in the world by WOMEX/World Music Charts Europe. Doublemoon’s artists spread the sound of Istanbul around the world by playing the world’s biggest festivals like Montreux Jazz, Montreal Jazz, Exit, and Roskilde; through gracing the covers of magazines like Global Rhythm; and in receiving nominations for the BBC Radio 3world music awards.
Doublemoon albums are accessible to all around the world through licensing agreements with international heavyweights like Atlantic Records, Ultra Records, BMG Germany, Traditional Crossroads, Musidisc and through partnerships with ten major distributors stretching from Spain to Germany, from France to Benelux, Italy and United Kingdom. Doublemoon has become the first Turkish record label to have its catalogue sold on Apple’s iTunes, Napster, MSN, and many other digital music stores.
