He made his debut for the Irish national team on November 22, 2008 in a test against Argentina in Croke Park, Dublin.

Ryan was part of the Munster team that won the 2010/11 Magners League, and he was selected in Ireland's training squad for the 2011 World Cup warm-ups in August. He played in the first two tests, against Scotland and France, and was selected in Ireland's squad to go to New Zealand.
