Donald Norcross is an American
labor leader and Democratic Party
politician who represents the 5th legislative district in the New Jersey Senate
. He was sworn in on January 19, 2010, two days after being selected by Camden County
and Gloucester County
Democrats to replace Dana Redd
. He had previously served in the New Jersey General Assembly
for one week, having been sworn in on January 12, 2010.
Norcross is currently the president of the Southern New Jersey AFL-CIO
Central Labor Council and resides in Camden
. He is the co-chair of the Camden County
Democratic Party. His brother, political boss
George Norcross, heads the South Jersey Democratic Organization.
Norcross and his running mate, Camden City Council President Angel Fuentes
, were elected to the Assembly in 2009 after Democratic incumbents Nilsa Cruz-Perez
and Joseph J. Roberts both retired. Roberts was re-nominated in the primary, but announced that he would not seek re-election in September 2009, allowing the party organization to select a replacement on the ballot. They selected Norcross; he and Fuentes then went on to win easily in the heavily Democratic 5th district.
Norcross was born in 1958 at Cooper University Hospital
in Camden, the son of George E. Norcross, Jr. He and his three brothers were raised in Pennsauken. He graduated from Camden County College
with a degree in criminal justice. In 1980, he served as an apprentice in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
, eventually becoming assistant business manager of the IBEW Local 351.
Norcross is married to Andrea Doran, an echocardiographer. They have three children.
