The Administration was created in 2011 as part of the government's large administrative reforms, the Kallikratis Reform. According to the Kallikratis Reform, the Decentralized Administrations are responsible for "perform[ing] general decisive authority in state affairs of their peripheries, according to Article 101 of the Constitution". The current Secretary-General of the Administration is Thymios N. Sokos.
