Debbie Green was born in South Korea

, Green-Vargas was a part of the Adidas Junior Team, which swept the USVBA Nationals, while being named All-American at the age of 16, the youngest player ever to be so honored.

Green-Vargas is an assistant coach for the Long Beach State women's volleyball team, currently in her 23rd year.

In 1986, she was selected to the United States Volleyball Association Hall of Fame, and in the spring of 1986 received the All-Time Great Volleyball Player award. On April 30, 1998, Green became the first woman to enter the Orange County Sports Hall of Fame.

Green married Joe Vargas and has two children, Nicole, who is a setter at Long Beach State, and Dana who is a setter at UCSB. Green-Vargas graduated from Long Beach State in 1992 with a BA in communications.

Collegiate career

Green was on the 1980 Olympic roster, but did not play because of the 1980 Olympic boycott. In 1984, Green helped team USA to a silver medal, the best finish in U.S. women's volleyball history.
