 system. The school has between 200-250 students in any given school year and has received the NC School of Excellence and the Magnet Schools of America designations. History

The school was founded in 1995 as a International Baccalaureatte Middle School. Since its founding, it has been called "one of the top middle schools in North Carolina".

In 2008 the school was included in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools budget for reconstruction. But reconstruction was later delayed, and CMS eventually announced it wouldn't happen.

In early 2010, the school's Future Cities team was announced to be in the Top 5 around the nation. After a few more weeks of elimination, the Future Cities team was announced on February 16 to be the No. 1 in the nation. The school received a trophy, and the National Finals grand prize team received a trip to U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama. Also, 3 members of the team traveled to Washington, D.C.

Davidson IB also has a notable science olympiad program, which has placed 13th in the nation in the past. In 2010, they placed 4th in the state.

Davidson IB is one of 10 schools who will close down next year due to CMS's shrinking budget.
