In 1994, he was elected to the Mandurah City Council, where he served as Deputy Mayor from 1997 until 2001.
In 2001, he was elected to state parliament, and was subsequently re-elected in 2005. In March 2007, he was given his current role as Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and the Peel Region.
