Short's debut in first-class cricket came in 1957, the same time that he started representing Derbyshire in the Minor Counties Championship. Short's debut came thanks to an innings defeat in the 1957 County Championship, a season where, despite giving himself a decent shot at success in the middle order, he averaged below 10.

Short spent the whole of 1958 out of the game, before playing for the Second XI in 1959. He returned to the first team in time for the start of 1960, and, despite hitting a half-century against Warwickshire
