He is currently serving his 2 year sabbatical from the University of Dundee as the Executive Director of Singapore's A*STAR Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB) where he was appointed from 1 August 2004. His wife, Professor Birgette Lane also has an appointment as Principal Investigator at IMCB and she is prominent for her work in Keratins and its mutations that could be the basis for genetic skin disorders. She was later appointed as the Executive Director of The Centre for Molecular Medicine (CMM) on 1 April 2006.

In January 2008, they will be also be returning from their extended sabbatical in Singapore to lead the new Division of Molecular Medicine, which is part of a £6 million investment in the College of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee
