Dave played many times for City having a superb left foot but his most notable game was in the FA Cup Semi-final against Everton in 1969 where he was employed to man-mark the great Alan Ball. Dave was so successful in City's 1-0 victory that Alan Ball visibly beat the ground with his fists in frustration at yet again having the football taken from his toes. Everton later signed Dave as a player, one can construe just to remove him from the opposition as Dave disappeared into obscurity.
