Byas grew up as a farmer in Yorkshire. He was a left-handed batsman who, very occasionally, bowled right-arm medium pace. He was appointed Yorkshire's captain
at the start of the 1996 season, following the resignation of Martyn Moxon
. In 2001, he led the county to their first County Championship
title win for thirty three years. He has since returned to Yorkshire as a coach.
In April 2007, the ECB
appointed him to train umpires
, even though he had had no regular experience of performing as an umpire.
