 member of the Georgia State Senate, representing the 42nd District from 2003 to 2010.

First elected in 2002, Adelman co-authored Georgia's post-conviction DNA testing law in 2003. After the 2004 court ordered redistricting of Georgia's legislative districts, Adelman was re-elected to the newly configured 42nd District and was chosen by his colleagues to be Minority Whip. Following the 2006 election, Adelman became Chairman of the Senate Urban Affairs Committee and was one of the only Democrats to chair a committee in the heavily Republican Georgia legislature.

An early supporter of then Senator Barack Obama's campaign for the Presidency, Adelman and his wife Caroline campaigned vigorously for Obama in multiple state primaries. Caroline would later serve as the official spokesperson for Obama's Georgia general election campaign, a role she had also filled for former President Bill Clinton's Georgia campaign.

In 2009, Adelman was nominated to serve as the United States Ambassador to Singapore by President Barack Obama. He was confirmed on March 19, 2010.

He is married to Caroline Adelman and together they are raising three children; Oscar, Leah, and Avery.
