against Canada on January 21, 1991 and his 42nd and final cap against South Africa on November 16, 2007. During his club career 'Hilts' won the European Cup for Bath in 1998, as well as league and domestic cup successes for the same club.

In 2000 and after 41 caps for Scotland Dave discovered that his grandfather was born in Bristol and not Edinburgh as previously believed. Under new international eligibility rules this meant that he no longer qualified to play for Scotland. Dave moved from Bath to Glasgow to play for the then Glasgow Rugby club in order to qualify under the 3-year residency rule. After that period of residency Dave played once more for Scotland before returning to the English West Country to play for Bristol, until retirement.
