, however grew up in Cinderford attending Heywood School and played for Cinderford Town at the age of 14. Bird was a member of the Cheltenham Town

 academy team and signed professionally for his local team in 2002. He has since made over 200 appearances for his club, his best season coming in 2007–08 where he had been a regular in the starting line-up and had scored four goals.

Bird was fan's player of the season for the 2007–08 and 2008–09 seasons.
