The system currently consists of one full line & one branch line:

Line 3 (cyan line), locally known as Qinggui #3 (confusingly light rail line 3), which connects Dalian Development Zone and Jinshitan with Dalian city center. It is a serpentine shaped line, and is mostly either elevated or at grade. It runs from Dalian Railway Station to Jinshitan.
A branch line was added to the line later. This new branch starts at Kāifāqū (开发区) station and stretches Northwest through Jinzhou (金州), ending just short of Pǔlándiàn (普兰店). It runs from Kaifaqu to Jiuli.
In Dalian, this line as has sometimes been classified as a light rail even though it's a full metro.

History

After 1950, Dalian suddenly faced high population growth. Due to its geographical situation, good cultural heritage & good transport, it attracted many native & foreign people. This caused increasing of motor cars & buses. It started a problem for trams & then the transport authority decided to reduce tram network at a large scale.

From then, 8 tram routes were closed one by one up to 1980. But at that time, overdependence on motorcars & buses caused major traffic and environmental problems. The tram network had been reduced to only 3 routes, but opening some old routes were not possible, since almost all of those routes were already occupied by bus. Reminding the problems of trams & buses, the Transport authority tried to get a solution to merge both types of transport, thus resulted trolleybus

. It runs with electricity and does not cause air pollution, but it utilizes existing roads, which was already occupied by many motor vehicles. Hence, the expansion of the trolleybus network was not ideal as well. At that moment, a proposal of subway system arose. After overcoming financial & political hurdles, construction started for the first line in September 2000. October 2002 saw the trial opening of the first line, which was finally put into operation in May 2003.
