. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. It was incorporated in 1886 and was named for the late Captain Emmet Crawford
who had previously been stationed at nearby Fort Robinson

In the city the population was spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 21.8% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 22.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 78.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $28,095, and the median income for a family was $35,139. Males had a median income of $26,250 versus $19,000 for females. The per capita income

just outside the Fort Robinson military reservation, Crawford was named in honor of Captain Emmet Crawford, formerly stationed at the nearby post and who had just recently been killed by Mexican irregulars along the U.S.-Mexico border. The town soon gained a reputation as one of the toughest in the west, with saloons outnumbering churches. The arrival of a second railroad, the Burlington Quincy line, provided an additional boost to the community.
Today, the CB&Q trackage is operated by the BNSF railway. The trackage that was laid by the FE&MV was acquired by the Chicago & North Western in 1903; Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern previously operated on the line and is now operated by the Canadian Pacific Railway
