When Coventry was first divided for parliamentary purposes, in the 1945 to 1950 Parliament, the area that later became this constituency was split between the then two seats of Coventry East
and Coventry West
.
The constituency consisted of a number of wards of the County Borough
of Coventry - Bablake, Foleshill, Holbrook, Radford, and Sherbourne. There were minor boundary changes to the borough and constituency in 1964, but the same wards remained in the division.
From 1974 Coventry was split into four new divisions. Foleshill ward became part of Coventry North East. The remaining four wards from the North division formed the whole of Coventry North West
