 (and, in some states, the runner-ups) of those Brazilian regions. The competition was divided in two zones, one for each region: the North Zone and the Northeast Zone. The best qualified team of each zone played against each other in the competition final. In 1970, the first two qualified teams from each zone played a four-team round robin to decide the competition champion.
