The compound muscle action potential (CMAP) or compound motor action potential is a electromyography
investigation (electrical study of muscle function).
The CMAP represents the sumation of group of almost simultaneous action potentials from several muscle fibers in the same area. These are usually evoked by stimulation of the motor nerve and are summed up. Prolonged compound muscle action potential have been discovered in patients that suffer from CIM. CIM stands for critical illness myopathy and is a frequent cause of weakness in the ICU.
