The company was set up by Terry Prone and Tom Savage following the resignation of former MD Terry Prone . Many Carr staff left the organisation to join the Communications Clinic, including the company's Head of Training, Hilary Kenny, former General Manager Anton Savage and former Head of Public Relations Gerard Kenny

In November 2011 The Communications Clinic was the subject of some media attention in Ireland following the suicide of their then employee, 25 year old Kate Fitzgerald. The story printed in The Irish Times and hosted on Broadsheet.ie revolves around The Communications Clinic's handling of their employees suffering with depression and mental illness.
