James began his career at schoolboy level with Shamrock Rovers before joining Bray Wanderers in 2002. Following 4 appearances in the 2002–03 season, James held down a regular starting XI spot at the club for the next 4 seasons. His achievements at Bray included helping the club to promotion at the end of the 2004 First Division season. James departed Bray in 2006 after making 109 appearances for the club.Galway United/Longford Town
James returned to League of Ireland football in 2007 with Galway United. His spell at Galway United was short-lived as he joined Longford Town mid-way through the 2007 campaign.
