Coline-Marie Orliac, Harp
Since her first public performance at age seven, French harpist Coline-Marie Orliac has captivated audiences in over fifteen countries with her flawless technique, rich tone and compelling artistry. A recent graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, she has already won top prizes from five international competitions and played with some of the world’s greatest orchestras.
Ms. Orliac’s 2011-12 schedule includes performances in Turkey and Greece with conductors Jean-Claude Casadesus and Christopher Warren-Green for the Queen Elizabeth Musical Voyage, concluding with a concert at the Athens and Epidaurus Festival. She also appears in recital with flutist Robert Aitken in Italy and Slovenia, and participates in the Festival Slowind (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and St. Bart’s Festival.
As an orchestral harpist, Ms. Orliac has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra in concerts conducted by Neeme Järvi and in the harp section of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Simon Rattle at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. In 2006 Ms. Orliac was invited by Claudio Abbado to tour Europe with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, and she was named a finalist/first substitute of the New World Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons. In August 2011 she was featured soloist in Ravel’s Tzigane with Sinfonia Varsovia at the Festival de Musique de Menton with violinist and conductor Maxim Vengerov.
An active chamber musician, Ms. Orliac has played at distinguished chamber music series and festivals. In 2006 she was invited to perform as soloist for the Spivakov Festival in Moscow. More recently she appeared at the Tenth World Harp Congress in Amsterdam and the Académie Européene de Musique in Aix-en-Provence, where she performed chamber music with cellist Jeremy Findler and violinist Luiz Filipe Coelho. She is a member of the Dolce Suono Ensemble, a highly praised ensemble of members of the Philadelphia Orchestra and graduates of the Curtis Institute of Music.
Among Ms. Orliac’s numerous awards are top prizes at the Seventh and Eighth USA International Harp Competitions, where she was twice awarded the Mario Falcao Prize for best performance of the newly commissioned work; first prize at the UFAM International Harp Competition; and second prize at the Vera Dulova Harp Competition in Moscow. She was a prizewinner at the Concours International de Harpe de la Cité des Arts de Paris, and she was a finalist in the Philadelphia Orchestra Albert M. Greenfield Competition.
Ms. Orliac received her Bachelor of Music from the Curtis Institute of Music, where she studied with Judy Loman and Elizabeth Hainen. At Curtis, she held the L. Daniel Dannenbaum Fellowship and was awarded the Joan Hutton Landis Award for Excellence in Academics. Her teachers also include Elizabeth Fontan-Binoche and Judith Liber, former principal harp of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.
Born in Paris, Ms. Orliac began studying piano at the age of five, and has since maintained a serious interest in piano performance in addition to her career as a harpist. At the National Conservatory of Nice, where she trained prior to entering Curtis, she graduated with first prizes in both harp and piano. Recently she has begun to pursue her love of singing and currently studies with baritone Luis Ledesma.
