Sanchez first performed in the band Dark Ecstasy, only to leave and join the band Toxic Parents instead. However, one month later, Toxic Parents was put to an end, as they decided to create their third group, Jumbo Head.

Claudio Sanchez was also the lead singer of the band Beautiful Loser. This band was said to have broken up over a fight over gas money. After this break up, Claudio went on a trip to Paris where he began writing a story around two characters he had created, named Coheed and Cambria Kilgannon. The characters lived in a fictional, foreign galaxy known as "Heaven's Fence." At first, the characters were based on himself and his girlfriend, but eventually, he changed them to represent his parents. In Paris, when he began writing this concept, he referred to it only as "The Bag.On.Line Adventures of Coheed and Cambria".

Claudio was the lead singer of the band Shabutie, which formed in Nyack, New York in 1995, but eventually broke up and was reformed with Josh Eppard replacing Nate Kelly on drums. This new band was dubbed Coheed and Cambria, named after the characters Claudio had written about in Paris. Coheed and Cambria's popularity secured Sanchez's identity as a musician and also helped his comic business, as many 'Coheed' fans were interested in the concept surrounding Coheed and Cambria, so, Sanchez responded with a series of comic books to flesh out the story.

The earliest comic books authored by Claudio Sanchez were entitled, "The Bag.On.Line Adventures of Coheed and Cambria," named after a shop in Paris which was near the hotel where Sanchez was staying. The Bag.On.Line Adventures only lasted through two issues, as Claudio was having trouble keeping up with demand and hard deadlines. His next attempt at revealing the concept was the graphic novel, "Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV Volume 1: From Fear Through The eyes of Madness". This publication told the story at the point of the album of the same name. Once again, however, the books went off the radar due to inability to keep up with demand.

Claudio finally succeeded in 2008 with the series, "The Amory Wars

, a concept band told through the character Jesse, a boxer known as the Prize Fighter Inferno behind Coheed and Cambria. The band also tells the story of The Blood Machine, a vicious contraption that murders its victims and takes their souls. Most recently Claudio released a 2 song 7" vinyl entitled, "The Beaver Records EP," which was associated with both Kill Audio and The Prize Fighter Inferno.

The band itself has a blend of acoustic guitar.
Claudio has been trying to perform a wide mix of his songs throughout the last year or two, playing Prize Fighter songs and, "Elf Tower, New Mexico," a song from his days in Shabutie, at the Neverender: SSTB shows. He has stated that Coheed and Cambria are writing new material for a new record, and the band has started performing a new song called "Iron Fist" acoustically in many locations.
