According to the Australian Bureau Statistics the City of Newcastle had an estimated resident population of 154,777 as of 30 June 2008. This was equal to 2.2% of the New South Wales population of 6.98 million and was an increase of 1,690 people over the previous year.

Local government

The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Newcastle is the head of the City of Newcastle. This is a Local Government Area which deals with local things such as some transport, rubbish and waste services and has power over passing land developments. The current Lord Mayor of Newcastle is John Tate who has been in office for more than 2 terms and he recently stood for election in the 2007 NSW State Election.
