Brought up near Axeminster on the Somerset-Devon border, Vacher attended Sherborne School and the Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth

On 9 September 2011, Vacher announced he would retire from Points West after 28 years in December 2011. He is married to Tilly with two sons.
