Butler began his career as a youth and reserve player for Liverpool F.C. He later moved to Accrington Stanley where he played 1st team football, and then moved to Barrow A.F.C.

Butler joined Sligo Rovers in 2008 and proved to be a top quality left back as the season progressed, contributing massively to their season making 22 League appearances.

In September 2008, emergency services were called to the scene of a crash which Butler was involved, after a 6 hour surgery, doctors confirmed he had shattered his kneecap and broke his shinbone.

Butler is expected back before the end of the 2009 season having recently had wires taken of his knee and is now involved in training to help his fitness.
