Pete Murray released two albums as the frontman of Ultraspank, and when the band broke up, he eventually formed Lo-Pro

 record label. While the band decided to press on and eventually release more music in 2009 and 2010, there was a period of over six years where the band did not release any music. During this time, one of Pete Murray's side projects was producing Ghost Machine's 2005 self-titled album

, in which he worked with John Stevens.

Eventually, they started working with Walter Flakus and started making music together. Pete Murray performed vocals, while the other two both are listed as "guitar, bass, and programming". The band appears to use a drum machine for the music's drumming. Members were never actually in the same room together when working on music, but rather, they used Pro-Tools and emailed each other parts back and forth.

The band started streaming songs in 2006, and continued to stream a few per year up through 2009. Most debuted on the band's myspace, but occasionally from Murray's myspace as well. For Pete Murray, it was intended as an outlet for music that didn't quite fit for his other band Lo-Pro, while the other band member's bands had disbanded. While Chokt has not streamed any new music since Fall 2009's "Only You", this is likely due to Murray's involvement with Lo-Pro finally releasing the Letting Go EP in October 2009 and The Beautiful Sounds of Revenge

on June 8, 2010. In an interview for Lo-Pro, Pete Murray announced his intentions to gain more exposure for Chokt, claiming "it won't be secret for long".
