. CESL was founded on the basis of a financing agreement between the European Community and the Government of the People’s Republic of China. It is the first Sino-foreign law school in China. The current Co-Deans are Fang Liufang

Prior to CESL’s establishment, Premier Wen Jiabao
expressed his hope that "CESL will educate a great many talented legal professionals with knowledge of both Chinese and Western laws."
, first talked about the idea of creating a Sino-European law school in 2003. The head of the Delegation of the European Commission to China, Serge Abou, also promoted this idea to the European Community. An agreement to create a Sino-European law school was signed by the European Commission and the Chinese government in 2006.
The inauguration ceremony of the China-EU School of Law was held on October 23, 2008 and attended by Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang

. The Master of Chinese Law is designed to provide an overview of China's legal framework within the context of post-1978 market reform. The Master of European and International Law exposes students to broad areas of public, private and criminal law with a focus on business law. Lecturers for the Master of European and International Law come from CESL’s partner universities in Europe who are collectively known as the Flying Faculty.

CLTE
CESL will start a new Chinese Law Taught in English programme in Autumn 2011. Courses aim to provide visiting students with concrete knowledge of Chinese law as well as with a comparative approach to legal studies.The programme will last one term and lead to a certificate awarded by CESL.
