The genus Cheirostylis consists of 53 species distributed from tropical Africa to the Pacific Asia (Seidenfaden, 1978; Lang, 1999). It is one of the so-called jewel orchids (Belitsky and Bersenev, 1999). This is a very distinct genus, characterized by its sepals connate to form a sepaline tube, lip with a saccate base containing a few papillae, claw entire on either side, column with two stylidia. The Cheirostylis is conventionally propagated by seeds, however the germination rate is very low.
