. It was known as the Elvehjem Museum of Art until 2005. The mission of the museum is to collect, preserve, interpret, and exhibit works of art and present related educational programs in support of the teaching, research, and public service mission of the university.

The museum is named after Jerome Chazen, a University of Wisconsin–Madison graduate and one of the founders of Liz Claiborne

. In May 2005 he and his wife, Simona, donated $20 million towards an expansion of the museum, which is due to be finished in 2011. The museum is raising funds for the remaining $15 million required for the expansion.
