between August 1947 and February 1989
. The district was named after the town of Chavakacheri
in Jaffna District
, Northern Province
. Kilinochchi Electoral District
was carved out of the southern part of the district in March 1960. The 1978 Constitution
of Sri Lanka introduced the proportional representation
