Major changes to the mall include the construction of the Classic Cinemas on the Northwest Anchor slot of the mall. In 2001, JCPenney closed their location, which became Von Maur a year later. On January 4, 2011, Sears announced that the Charlestowne location would close before April 3, 2011 after negotiations between the new mall management company and Sears officials broke down, leaving only Carson Pirie Scott, Kohl's, and Von Maur the remaining anchor stores. Sears shut its doors for the last time on March 20, 2011.
In June 2010, a California based investment group acquired the mall and plans to revitalize it. Some new entertainment attractions that the new owners are bringing to Charlestowne Mall includes an indoor ice skating rink (which is to open across from the mini golf course, next from the former Sears anchor), lounge with free Wi-Fi, a high-end sushi and seafood buffet, and all new restaurants and high end stores. Starting in summer of 2011, a new parking lot, landscaping and exterior enhancements have begone. Finally the 18-screen Classic Cinema in the mall, is planning to renovation and modernize.
