Cunliffe was a right-handed batsman and played 44 innings in 25 first class matches with an average of 9.45 and a top score of 47. He was a right-arm round arm medium pace bowler and took 93 first class wickets with an average of 15.00 and a best performance of 7-25.

Cunliffe died suddenly at Davos Platz, Switzerland aged 26.
