It is a comprehensive school educating pupils aged between 11 and 18 years of age.
Chalvedon has over 1800 pupils on roll including 196 sixth formers.

The school was first opened in 1966 and has been operating on this site since then.
Mr A S Roach became the Principal of the school in 1988.

In January 2006 Chalvedon School federated with another local comprehensive school, Barstable School, to form the Federation of East Basildon.
