s for telecommunication, finance, energy, and other industries, to both corporate and government sectors.

History

CPqD was created in 1976 to serve as a telecom research and development center for Telebrás, a Government-owned company which controlled the public telecom service providers in Brazil.

In 1998, as a result of the privatization process of Telebrás, CPqD became a private-law corporation, broadening the scope of activities and potential openings for new markets.
Digital switches, antennas, digital transmission systems, optical transmission equipment, fiber optics, laser semi-conductors, packet switching systems, inductive card pay phones, telex switching centers and complex business and operation support systems are among the technologies developed by CPqD.

Contribution to Society

The knowledge generated by CPqD reaches the market in the form of product technologies, software systems, technological services, consulting services, and ownership of intellectual capital in technology-based emerging companies.

CPqD portfolio includes all aspects that are involved in the current events: broadband in the telecom sector; smart grid in the electric power sector; future banking in the financial sector; digital cities in the public administration sector. Blending with these day-to-day life aspects of society and corporations come mobility, communication and information security, and socio-environmental responsibility.

CPqD’s R&D program, which is partially supported by government Science and Technology funds, focuses on activities towards future technological transitions, projects aimed at market needs and the use of technology to support public policies for digital inclusion.

The product technologies developed by CPqD are transferred to several companies, which are then responsible for their production and commercialization. All tied up within CPqD’s Universe are unique and distinct organizations – developed as a direct or indirect effort of CPqD – disseminating innovative technologies and high value-added products and services. Padtec, Trópico, ClearTech, Instituto Atlântico, JÁ!, CPqD Technologies & Systems, Inc., SPAT, Civcom and WxBR are all part of this Universe, whose core is the Brazilian technology created by CPqD.

The Operations and Business Support Systems (OSS/BSS) are CPqD’s flagship software solutions, which have been successfully deployed in several organizations from different industries in Brazil and abroad.

CPqD laboratories offer more than 700 accredited tests and technological services in different fields. Some examples are optical fiber cables and accessories, antennas, switching and terminals, radio systems, electromagnetic compatibility, mechanic characterization, electrical safety, SAR, batteries and colorimetry.

The solutions developed by CPqD are present in Brazil and in several Latin American countries, in the USA, Angola, Samoa and Europe, where CPqD has established strategic business alliances with local companies.
