The CSS cadre consists of Group A and Group B officers under Central Civil Service.

History

The origins of the CSS can be traced back to 1919, when the Imperial Secretariat Service came into being as one of the off -shoots of the Llewellyn-Smith Committee, set up on the eve of the Montagu–Chelmsford Reforms. After Independence, the ‘Secretariat Offices’ evolved into the Central Secretariat Service, which is spread across various Ministries/Departments.

Recruitment into CSS

Until 2003 of the restructuring of CSS, the direct recruitment into CSS was through All India Civil Service Examination

. However, recently the Central Government has stopped the direct recruitment into CSS through civil service exam.

At present the direct recruitment into the CSS is available only at the level of Assistants through the Graduate level Examination of the SSC.
